There’s a full screen option, but everything looks horizontally stretched (aka fatter) to fill the screen. The screen resolution for Chrono Cross remains 4:3, so for the regular and zoomed option there are vertical letterbox bars. The player can chance the screen resolution and switch between an HD font or imitation pixel font. There are some additions designed to make the game easier, such as the ability to turn off enemy encounters and to add battle enhancements to make combat easier. ![]() The music has been remixed to sound higher quality, though fans of the original may consider that claim to be subjective. The 3D models and illustrations have been given an HD makeover which players can switch between the classic look and the new HD one, along with the use of a background filter. Chrono Cross has a variety of modern upgrades to help make the 22-year-old game feel modern. But looking it at from that perspective is unfortunate because it can blind the player to the unique experience that is Chrono Cross and the masterpiece that it is.Ĭhrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition includes a remastered version of Chrono Cross and for the first time in the west a (legit) copy of Radical Dreamers. While set in the same world with many nods and references to its predecessor, Chrono Cross deviates from the original so much it’s these references are the only things forming a tenuous link to it. That is unless they want Chrono Trigger II. Between the innovative take on traditional turn-based battle systems, complex story and fantastic soundtrack, it seems like it would be hard for JRPG fans not to love Chrono Cross. Originally released to western audiences in 2000 for PlayStation, it received nearly universal praise from critics and eventually sold well enough to be added to Sony’s greatest hits collection. Tech troubles aside, Katharine had great things to say about Chrono Cross, calling it “a JRPG that has instantly captivated me with its colourful setting, mad cast of characters, stunning music and intriguing parallel worlds.” The Radical Dreamers port also brings in new HD character models, a few accessibility options, a remastered OST, and a much appreciated fast-forward option.Ĭhrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is available for £16/€20/$20 on Steam.Jeopardy could ask a question about one of the highest critically-acclaimed games that many consider a disappointing sequel and the answer would be Chrono Cross. I quite like Chrono Trigger and I like PSX RPGs even more, so maybe now’s the perfect time to jump into Radical Dreamers. Long-awaited updates are now a tradition for the series since the original Chrono Trigger’s PC port waited four years for its much-needed patch. On Twitter, Squeenix say the update will bring “frame rate improvements, changes to the growth system for Pip, and fixes for other bugs.” Patch notes aren’t available as of now, but hopefully, the upcoming update is substantial enough to fix the majority of tech problems. At launch, Katharine’s review detailed many of Radical Dreamer’s tech issues including frequent screen-tearing, occasional input lag, and a frame rate that’s “so fundamentally borked it’s like those 22 years haven’t even happened.” Katharine wasn’t the only one experiencing problems as Radical Dreamers currently has a mixed reception on Steam user reviews, with many fans pointing to the laggy frame rate drops. ![]()
